50 Years Ago — April 10, 1974
  Morneault house dates from 1857 – The Morneault house in Grand Isle has been given to the Living Heritage Vivant Historical Society. There is a very special reason that every effort should be made to preserve this house. It is one of the oldest houses still in existence along the valley.

Beard be gone – Before the entire Fort Kent Elementary School population, Principal Gary Stevens had to come clean on his challenge. Stevens challenged the students to collect double the amount of General Mills box tops this year over last, as part of a PTA fundraiser. If the students met their goal, Stevens promised to shave his beard before the entire student body.

Dr. Madigan Is Chamber’s Outstanding Citizen–  The Board of Directors of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, at their meeting Tuesday, announced that John B. Madigan, a prominent Houlton physician, has been elected as recipient of the Chamber’s Outstanding Citizen award for 1974.

HHS Show Choir claims second- place honors – It was a little sining, a little dancing, colorful costumes and some explosions that earned the Houlton High School Show Choir a second-place finish at the High School Show Choir a second-place finish at the Maine State Vocal Jazz Festival held last weekend in Houlton.

Ladner won a lifetime award — The Maine Arts Sponsors Association awarded their first Lifetime Achievement Award to Dan Ladner, teacher and director at the Caribou High School and the Performing Arts Center for his lifetime contributions to the performing arts in Maine.

Still going strong — Jos. W. Gary, one of Caribou’s highly esteemed citizens, and postmaster for about 40 years, is still enjoying all his facilities, although nearing the century mark as regards years, being 94 years old.
