New FM Radio Station Goes On Air Today – WDHP- FM in Presque Isle- Caribou has announced that they will officially be on the air as of today. They are located 96.9 on the FM dial and are going to broadcast in stereo quadraphonic which is new in Aroostook County.

St. John Valley area From our Files – Week of September 20, 2023

Members of the graduating class of 1943 of Van Buren Boys’ and Girls’ High School met for their 55th reunion recently. The event began with a Mass at the Acadian Village Chapel in Upper Van Buren, officiated by Rev. Adhemar Deveau, O.M.I. Following was a buffet meal served at the Village kitchen building.

25 Years Ago – September 23, 1998
Award winner — Mapleton Elementary School principal and fifth-grade teacher, Gail Gibson, was left speechless at the surprise presentation. Gibson won the Milken Award for excellence in education, which carries a $25,000 cash award. Attending the ceremony were her entire family, plus Easton Superintendent of Schools, Richard Durost, a former Milken award winner.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 23, 1998
ATX opens an office in the downtown area — Three miles of wire, numerous cubicles and a state-of-the-art computer system were installed in the former Brooks building to prepare for one of the city’s newest businesses. A crowd of more than 50 people showed up to celebrate the grand opening and dedication at the company’s new Sweden Street location.

Patten woodworker named WearGuard Hero of the Year– Lynne Doliber of Patten was chosen as Wearguard Hero for 1998. Doliber was chosen, with three others, from over 1000 entries across the nation. Doliber is employed by S.C. Wood Harvesting Co. in Patten.

100 Years Ago – Sept. 13, 1923
Directory being formed — A new pocket directory of the village of Caribou is being printed at this office. The work, which was compiled by W. B. Brown, contains the names of our citizens, together with their address, street and number; also other valuable information. When completed the book will, we predict, find a ready sale, and be of considerable value.

Froggatt was hired by the Star-Herald — Norman E. Froggatt and family of Amherst, N. S., arrived in town Tuesday. Mr. Froggatt, who was an all round printer, had accepted a position in the mechanical department of the Star-Herald.
