1999 Miss Easton crowned — Crystal Ferris, 18-year-old daughter of Wade and Leah Ferris, and a senior at Easton High School, was crowned 1999 Miss Easton by the reigning 1999 Junior Miss Easton, Shelby Wilcox, at the Community Tea sponsored by the Easton Home Extension held at the community center April 24.

Ground Is Broken — Construction of new Houlton Regional Hospital got its official start Thursday morning at groundbreaking ceremonies on the site. Despite a Wednesday storm that dropped nearly a foot of snow on the ground, about 75 persons turned out for the brief ceremony.

Levesque wins secretaries honor — Sandi Levesque of the Holy Rosary Rectory in Caribou was given the best secretary award in appreciation of Professional Secretaries Day on Wednesday, April 21. She was given a bouquet of roses and a balloon from Phil’s Florist.

50 Years Ago – April 24, 1974
Maine’s Minimum Wage Goes To $2 On May 1 — Because of the increase in the Federal minimum wage effective May 1, Maine minimum wage will increase from $1.90 to $2.00 on that date. Also, the rate for students who are less than 19 years old will be increased on May 1 from $1.43 per hour to $1.50 per hour under the Maine law.

Maine restaurants go smoke-free – Governor Angus King signed the first statewide smoke-free restaurant law in Maine this week. The new law, which eliminates smoking in about 5,500 restaurants and Class A restaurants/lounges throughout the state, will become effective in late August or early September.

Easton Kiwanis president received an award — Easton Kiwanis president Barbara Blackstone was presented an award at the club’s April 15 meeting by member, Mary (Mike) Carter. The award was for being an Outstanding Citizen and chosen as the Aroostook County All-Star of the Year by WAGM-TV.

75 Years Ago – April 21, 1949
Plan outdoor theater to open this summer on the Presque Isle road — Eight acres of land on the Ralph Hitchings farm, Presque Isle road, Caribou have been purchased by Gordon Wilcox, Washburn, and Lewis Christie, Presque Isle, who plan to set up an outdoor movie theater, to be ready for use the early part of this summer.
