People always say “There’s nothing to do in The County.” I however don’t think that’s true.
There’s no real accounting for what one’s ancestors did well before one was born, but the taint can linger if it’s bad enough. Slave-ownership is a for instance. One can account for it by noting that it existed somewhere in the family lineage.
If you are like me, it’s easy to think these sweaty days will never end.
So there you are, on a sunny summer day, pondering which great County hike you are going to enjoy.! You check the weather and see that the humidity is 48 percent, so you know it won’t feel muggy while hiking, right? Wrong!
It was an interesting moment. Lots of fire trucks and swarthy types in the city police uniforms, a governor, some city councilors, and various interested people showed up for the beginning of the 200th Birthday of Maine. Beauty queens in tiaras and sashes added a moment of glamour and blueberry parfaits brought color to the cheeks. The Governor recounted the noble history of the state.
The following is a letter in response to why trees won’t thrive in the downtown area of Houlton (reported in the July 31 edition). The article said it was a mystery that nobody so far can solve.
