Historically speaking – Week of January 26, 2022

Presque Isle has long been a bastion of higher education. Today, the City boasts the University of Maine at Presque Isle (founded in 1903), Northern Maine Community College (founded in 1961), and the graduate program for Husson University.

In support of act that would help Maine tribes

To the editor:
A very important justice bill is about to be considered by the Maine state legislature — a consensus product of several bipartisan committees. LD 1626 (An Act Implementing the Recommendations of a Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act) will help reverse some of the unfortunate restrictions on Wabanaki sovereignty in the Implementing Act, which accompanied the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act of 1980.

Cracking the shell on fowl products

Eggs are nothing to joke about. That funny object in the fridge is round on one end and pointy on the other. Rather fragile if dropped but it still remains a potent protein source.Here in the states grocery stores carry mostly chicken eggs.

In the City – Week of January 19, 2022

Do you love winter? Have a hankering to ride snowmobiles? Come on out for the first annual County Snow Fest.  This City-sponsored event will take place Friday, Jan. 28 through Sunday, Jan. 30.  There will be events for all ages, some of which are free.

New code permitting software

If only there was enough time in the day to do all the tasks we need to complete. Residents, carpenters, electricians, and contractors are all plagued with completing paper applications for building, electrical, and Certificate of Occupancy permits before sending the application and cash or check payment through the mail, or dropping it off at City Hall.

Northeast Airlines and Norman Hanson

Often in life, we take for granted what we see in front of us every day. Here in Presque Isle, we are very fortunate to have an airport with a major airline carrier providing service. There are municipalities far larger than us around the country that cannot make that same claim.

Humanity unites us

I had what is categorized as a “sleepless night” last evening.   I am not sure what it was that was behind such turmoil within me, but it was causing great havoc and dismay. I believe we all strive for peace of mind and during the usual hours of sweet and welcome slumber.
