Here back east

The day was overcast but still warm for September. I was in shorts and a well-worn wool plaid shirt–one of my standbys from fishing trips past. Andy, my friend and local guide, was waiting anxiously beside his trailer when I pulled up.

Not my America

To the editor:
Let’s update the interim scorecard for COVID-19.  According to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 dashboard, on August 27, 2020, America had 5,719,841 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 177,332 COVID-19-related deaths, and Canada had 125,969 cases and 9,090 deaths.

Just like you, I want to get back to work

I don’t know anyone who likes to leave work half-done. But when the Maine Legislature adjourned early in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s what we did.

Large families

Today the ideal family size is two parents and two children, but years ago families were much larger. In my research I’ve frequently encountered families with 15 or more children.
