Dr. Beth Sperry and her medical team from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland tended to 180 cats in four days during a free spay/neuter clinic in Caribou in February.
Recently we took two cats to the vet: Jake, who had to have a CT scan, biopsy and dental, and Claire, who was spayed, tested and had a full panel of blood work. They needed this medical attention in order to correct health issues and to eliminate pain.
It was wonderful to see a free spay and neuter clinic in Caribou a few weeks ago. Dr. Beth Sperry from Portland, with four experienced helpers, arrived to do a four-day cat clinic.
Not only do pets make us healthier in normal times, in stressful times the benefit of a pandemic puppy (or cat), or other non-human companion, goes even further.

Most pet parents spoil their pets in their own way, whether with paw pedicures, extra cuddles or extra treats. And having a spoiled dog isn’t necessarily a bad thing — it’s a sign that you love your pet. It only becomes a problem if it starts to affect their health, their behavior or your wallet.
In this article I would like to talk about some of the kitties who are long term residents at The Ark. Cats who have special needs or health issues are often difficult to ever be placed. It is not because we do not want to place them.
Volunteers at Caribou’s Halfway Home Pet Rescue Free Pet Food Pantry recently distributed $2,567 worth of food, purchased from Sleeper’s, thanks to grant funding that not only helped animals, but gave the pet rescue a new mission.
