HOULTON — Once again the Church of the Good Shepherd Youth Group participated in the World Vision 30-Hour Famine project. Heather Rockwell, Alicia Rockwell, Erin Wellington, Jamiee Theriault, Tyler Delano and Dustin Delano chose to raise money through pledges to help aide those who are suffering from starvation. The youth started fasting at 5 a.m. on Saturday May 24. The only food eaten in the next 30-hours was one bowl of plain white rice and juice. The fast ended after church service on Sunday with a bountiful breakfast prepared and served by Roger Habrle and James Smith.
The kids were busy during their time together; picking fiddleheads, sweeping the church driveway, preparing gratitude stones and composing prayers. Each activity allowed the young people an opportunity to reflect on what they are truly grateful for and to consider the many blessings they have.
One activity that stood out was the Prayer Walk About in the evening, during which they read individually written prayers. Each of the ten prayers was chosen for an area that represented the group shared gratitude. Another project that was shared by all who went to church Sunday morning each person was offered a painted gratitude stone so they could practice with the youth group an Attitude of Gratitude.
The youth group is very thankful for all who contributed to this very worthwhile cause. Through everyone’s generosity and matching funds from World Vision we were able to raise $2,840. That deserves a gratitude stone all its own!
