Caribou – Roger E. Niles, 55, died December 16, 2008, at Caribou after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Van Buren November 15, 1953 the son of the late Earl and Leola (Derosier) Niles. He was a 1972 graduate of Caribou High School and also received his Commercial Driving License instructor certification. Roger served with the US Army as a Military Policeman, stationed at Ft. Dix, N.J. He was a member of the Henry B Pratt Post 15 American Legion. Roger was a tractor trailer driver for years, before purchasing his own truck in 1990. After several years, he sold it to be home with his family. He was employed at the Aroostook Medical Center for several years and more recently was the commercial driving instructor at Loring Job Corps in Limestone. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and he married Susan McCormick in 1978. Roger was an avid motorcycle rider and enthusiast and at one time was the proud owner of a Harley Davidson. Following the tragic death of his friend, Conrad Bouchard, Roger organized a fundraiser that helped purchase a new boat and rescue equipment which was donated to the Caribou Emergency Management Agency.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Sue, of Caribou are his two daughters, Kelly Lajoie and her husband Andrew of Presque Isle and Katie Niles and her boyfriend Phillip White of Bangor, his sister Christine Delano and her husband Ralph of N. Conway, N.H., three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kylie, and Mercedes, several nieces, nephews and special aunts and uncles. Roger was predeceased by a brother John Paul Niles in 2000.
A funeral mass was celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, December 20, 2008, from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Spring interment will be in the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery. Arrangements by the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. For online registery please go to www.mocklerfuneralhome.com.
