Redemption center donates to Washburn soup kitchen

Business gives back
Some customers of the Washburn Redemption Center have been donating all or a portion of their returns to support the Washburn Soup Kitchen. Each month, owner-operator Gerald Carney gives these monies to the soup kitchen.

Also receiving a check from the redemption center was Dwight Sturgeon as he won the prize drawing for the month of December. Each time a customer turns in $5 in returnables, they may submit their name into a drawing to be held the last day of each month. The prize is a choice of a $30 gift certificate to White’s Service, the Washburn Food Mart or $30 cash from Washburn Redemption Center.
The Washburn Soup Kitchen will be serving hot meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. and has hopes of extending their hours to one additional day per week, possibly serving meals on Wednesdays or Fridays. In order to accomplish this, more volunteers are needed. Anyone being able to donate their time is being asked to contact Elizabeth Richardson at 455-0900 or 764-3167.

School reorganization voting
There will be special vote on school administration reorganization on Tuesday, Jan 20. Polls in all three communities will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Washburn residents will be casting their ballots at the Civic Center, Wade will hold their voting at the Dunn Town Advent Christian Church and Perham residents will be voting at the Town Office on High Meadow Road. Please note that all three town clerks have absentee ballots for those not able to make it to the polls on voting day.
The Rural School Union (Unit) proposed for our area includes Blaine, Bridgewater, Easton, Mars Hill, Perham, Wade and Washburn. Brochures are in area businesses, at the town offices and at the school detailing information which will be helpful for all residents to decide how they wish to vote on this issue. One very special flag
Two residents from Wade have taken on a project to honor and support our area servicemen and veterans who have been deployed during the War on Terrorism. They have a large flag which has been flown over several homes in the local area while the men and women of the household were on active duty.
Jim LeClair and Jimmy Vaughn have this flag and some of the returned veterans have signed it. LeClair and Vaughn hope to get all the service men and women to sign the flag which will be displayed eventually in a prominent place in our community. Your help is needed to compile a list of veterans, so that none will be left out of this special effort to show our community’s support of the troops. Anyone wishing to add a name to this list is asked to phone Jim LeClair at 455-5979 or Jimmy Vaughn at 455-4769.
Recently, the Washburn Fire and Police departments, along with a group from the Patriot Guard riders who “stand for those who stood for us,” welcomed two veteran returnees, Seth Milton and Erik Vaughn, back home with an escort from the town line.
