UMPI hosts Inauguration-watching event
PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle is inviting the campus and community to gather at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, to celebrate the Presidential Inauguration ceremony. In observance of the occasion, all are invited to view the ceremony on a large projection screen in Wieden Auditorium. The event begins with a welcome and introductions by University President Don Zillman, followed by a short talk by Joy Cushman, who served as a deputy field director President-Elect Barack Obama’s campaign team. College Goal Sunday PRESQUE ISLE – College Goal Sunday, sponsored by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) and coordinated at the University of Maine at Presque Isle by TRiO Upward Bound, will take place on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. in Folsom 105 on the UMPI campus. Staff will be on hand to assist with completing and filing FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) documents. This free event is open to the entire community. High school seniors and parents are especially encouraged to attend, along with currently enrolled college students needing assistance. For information call 768-9612.
Chamber Orchestra concert
PRESQUE ISLE – The Northern Maine Chamber Society Orchestra will celebrate its 24th season with a winter performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, in the University of Maine at Presque Isle Campus Center. A second concert will be performed in Houlton on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church. The orchestra is under the direction of Conductor Waldo Caballero, string teacher for the Orono School Department and a member of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Members of the all-volunteer group come from as far away as Sherman Mills, Bangor and Fosterville, New Brunswick. Most are professional teachers and advanced students, seeking to bring high-quality classical music to northern Maine. The program features works by Rossini, John Williams, Puccini and others. White Mountain trip
PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI) will offer a four-day Winter Ascent trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire from Wednesday, Feb. 18 to Saturday, Feb. 21, for campus and community members. Cost for UMPI students and non-students will be announced. Registration deadline for the trip is Monday, Jan. 26, with a $50 deposit made at the time of registration.
