CELEBRATING WITH CAKE — Doris Warman celebrated her 106th birthday on Jan. 7. Born in Merrill she has witnessed a lifetime of inventions, from the most rustic to space age.
Born just after the turn of the century Doris Warman has seen it all. Doris celebrated her 106th birthday on Jan. 7 with her grandnieces, Maureen Friel of Cary and Peggy Robinson of Houlton at the Gardiner Nursing Home where she has been a resident for the past four years.
Doris was born in 1903 to Warren and Faustina (Tarbell) Clark on the Clark Settlement Road in Merrill. She was so tiny when she was born that her mother kept her in a small box and often put her behind the wood stove to keep her warm. She had seven sisters and one brother. Only one sister Maxine Moore is still living. She is 88 years old and lives in Bangor.
Warman attended Merrill schools, and went on to Teachers’ College in Presque Isle and Castine. After graduation she taught in the one-room schools of Merrill, Smyrna and Oakfield.
In 1931, Doris married Herman Warman. After their marriage, she worked with her husband at Keith Friel’s lumber camp cooking for the woodsmen, while he manned the crews. Mr. Warman has since passed away.
Later in life she did housework in both Bangor and Houlton. Doris also worked as a clerk in Bill Currier’s store here in town.
Through the years, Doris did many crafts including tatting, crocheting and making quilts. She raised chickens and pigs and was a great gardener.
