Wildcat players of the week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Caitlyn Esancy and Lucas Mathers for being selected as athletes of the week for February 9-21. Esancy scored 45 points in three games to lead the girls varsity basketball team to the semi- finals of the Class B Eastern Maine Basketball Tourney.
Mathers won the state Class B Giant Slalom race and was named the State of Maine Class B Boys Skimeister for 2008-2009.
Quoggy Jo ski results
On Feb. 16, in girls’ 6 and under skiing, Emma Postell placed first. Placing first in girls’ 10-12 skiing was Cameo Madore with second place going to Maddy Postell. In girls’ 13-15 skiing, Hanna Postell took first. In boys’ 6 and under skiing, Connor Demerchant placed first and Quinn Demerchant placed second. Grant Stewart took first in boys’ 7-9 skiing and Adam Patterson took second. In boys’ 10-12 skiing, Cooper Madore finished in first place. In snowboarding, boys’ 13-15, Cole Farley placed first and Mikey Michaud second.
On Feb. 22, E. Postell placed first again in girls’ 6 and under skiing and in girls’ 7-9 skiing, Madison Michaud took first. Madore and M. Postell finished in first and second respectively for girls’ 10-12 skiing and H. Postell finished first in girls’ 13-15 skiing. For the boys’ 7-9 skiing, A. Patterson placed first with Cole Patterson taking second. And in boys’ 10-12 skiing, Madore took first again.
On Sunday, March 1, E. Postell finished first in girls’ 6 and under skiing and in girls’ 7-9 skiing Tessa Cannon placed first. M. Postell took first in girls 10-12 skiing with Madeline Cannon in second and Anna Cannon in third. H. Postell took first in girls’ 13-15 skiing. In boys’ 6 and under skiing, C. Demerchant was first and Q. Demerchant second. For boys’ 10-12 skiing, Madore took first with Aaron Swanson in second and Austin Scott in third. And for boys’ 13-15 snowboarding, Farley was first with Lucas Kinney and Alex Scott in second and third respectively.
X-C Ski Frolic
The Himie Towle Memorial is pleased to announce the X-C Ski Frolic on Sunday, March 8. Sponsored by Cary Medical Center and the Nordic Heritage Sport Club, the event will take place at the Nordic Heritage Center.
Cost to register is $20 family, $10 adult and $5 youth, and includes a homemade soup lunch. The first 100 to register will receive a Frolic long sleeve t-shirt.
The mass-start event is freestyle cross-country (classic track also available), and snowshoe enthusiasts are also welcome to tour the snowshoe trails. 1st and 2nd place awards will be handed out in 22 categories with a special award for the overall female and male winners in 7.5K Main Event. Aroostook Cup points will be awarded for the 7.5K event (14 and older) with random prize drawings for everyone who registers.
Proceeds to benefit the Nordic Heritage Sport Club. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the events start at 1 p.m. with the 7 and under 200 meter race followed by the 8 and 9 400 meter at 1:05 p.m. The 10 and 11 (800 Meter) is at 1:10 p.m. and the 12 and 13 (2 Kilometer) will be at 1:15 p.m. 14 and older (7.5 Kilometer) concludes the races at 1:30 p.m. with lunch held at the Lodge. The Awards Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. following all events.
Ten Star all-star basketball camp
Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star all-star summer basketball camp. The camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison. Players from 50 states and 11 foreign countries attended the 2008 camp. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American team.
Camp locations include: Ithaca, NY; Phoenix, AZ; Babson Park, FL; Gainesville, GA; Champaign, IL; Glassboro, NJ; Marietta, OH; Lebanon, TN; Commerce, TX; and Blacksburg, VA. UMPI to hold umpire clinic
The Northern Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires will begin holding clinics for new members beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Interested individuals should meet in the North Classroom in Weiden Hall on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus at 6 p.m. that first night.
Cost of the clinic is $40, which includes the rule book. Other class dates will be March 3, 10, 18, 24, 30, and April 7. Those passing the board test and mechanics session will be eligible to begin working this spring at the middle school level. Coach of the Year Award
Fort Fairfield Lady Tigers coach Larry Gardner, Presque Isle Wildcats coach Tim Prescott and Presque Isle Lady Wildcats coach Jeff Hudson have all been named coach of the year for Class D and Class B basketball respectively.
On March 14, the three coaches will be recognized with plaques at the McDonald’s All-Star games in Bangor.
