Young dancers, big magic
Young dancers will take to the stage early this year as the Houlton School of Dance opens its doors for the recital tomorrow and Friday.
The reason for the time change is the graduation of one of Hartley’s favorite dancers, her son Derek, who has studied jazz and continues to study tap with his mom. Hartley plans to spend time with Derek and her seventh-grade son Zach, also a dancer, as they wrap up a school year, celebrate Derek’s birthday and move into a new stage of their lives.
As in years past, the recital will contain two acts separated by a 10-minute intermission. Unlike previous years, however, there will not be a ballet this year. A themed ballet, according to Hartley, takes a great deal of preparation. “It takes a lot of extra time and rehearsals to put together a story. In the past, the main characters would even travel to Millinocket for extra rehearsal time,” explains Hartley. “I would travel extra days to Houlton.”
Hartley has, however, connect the first act with a Disney theme, infusing some local magic into the show.
Along with the time change, a significant staff change has also occurred. Brandi Hill, once a student teacher herself, joins Hartley, Sue Wiate-York, Gretal Crockett and student teacher Ashley Cleary. Hill has taught in other areas and brings enthusiasm and experience to the school.
Instructors and the young dancers endured long rehearsals on April 23, 27 and 28, as they polished routines. Hartley reflects upon their toil, saying, “The kids have worked extremely hard this year, especially the last 5 weeks. We have had a lot of illness, snowstorms, and conflicting activities that hurt our preparation for an early recital.” Routines are coming together now, though, and the standard is as high as ever.
In addition to the Houlton students, ranging in age from 4-18, Hartley has invited some special guests. Hartley’s own dance instructor still teaches a couple of students at her home in Sherman and asked if they could be in the show. They will be performing two numbers.
As in previous years, Hartley expects sold-out performances. Anyone who has not acquired tickets yet may contact HSD secretary Michelle McClure at 694-1889 for information or to be put on a waiting list. Tickets are $4 per person. Parents are reminded to return extra tickets to Michelle so that everyone may enjoy the festivities.
Both performances will be held at the Houlton High School auditorium and will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
