OAKFIELD – Earnest C. Hayes, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior, April 20, 2009. He was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Crystal, the son of John and Stella (Smith) Hayes.
As a young man, Earnest was a woodsman and worked on farms. In his later years, he worked as a custodian for Southern Aroostook School and as a caretaker for the John Warner Estate. After retiring, Earnest loved gardening and woodworking. Earnest was a unique and loving man and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by the "joy of his life," Joyce; and blended families, Beth Rowe and husband, Mike, of Waldo, Yvonne Gould and Dan of Sherman, Brad Emery and Sherri of Island Falls, Joe Emery and Linda of Millinocket, Mike Emery and Cindy of Milo, and Randy Emery and Stacy of Island Falls; also Gloria Caron and Jerry of Merrill, Pat White and Bryant of Bucksport, Bruce Russell and Judy of Smyrna, Bev Dickinson and Peter of Oakfield, Chris Russell and Jamie of Smyrna; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Goldie; two infant children; his second wife, Nina; one grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Friends called noon-1 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls, where funeral services began 1 p.m. with the Rev. Sterling Lawrence. Spring interment will be at Golden Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Pentecostal Church, Oakfield, ME 04763.
