Boy Scouts spring clean
Members of Boy Scout Troop 177 completed their annual service project at the Lidstone Methodist Church on Thursday, May 7. The Scouts and leaders swept away a winter’s worth of sand and rocks that had accumulated on the church parking lot. This task was made easy for the Scouts with many hands doing the work.
The parking lot is more presentable and makes for a much easier walking surface for the members of the church. This act of kindness by the Scouts is in thanks for being able to use the church at times for their potluck suppers and courts of honor.
The members of the church will also be helping the Scouts complete the Boy Scout religious award in the near future.
Those attending the cleanup were Scouts: Adam Wilcox, Jacob Reed, Curtis Thompson, Kody Brissette, Brandon Cropley, Andrew White and Parker Thompson. Adults helping were: Larry Harrison, Don Wilcox, Mike Thompson and Greg Cropley. Other members of the troop remained at the troop campsite preparing for the upcoming spring Camporee to be held in West Chapman starting on Friday, May 29,  through Sunday, May 31.

Murder mystery solved
The infamous mystery of murder was solved and the guilty party was found out during the Washburn Rotary Supper held at the elementary school on Saturday, May 9. “Mayor Beauregard T. Brady” greeted folks to this Cactus Gulch event.
The Mystery Theatre, “Death in Them Thar Hills” (or “Who Killed Dusty Jones”), was performed by “actors” including: Birdina Cochran — Doc Tricia Truehart; Laura Turner — Sharpshooter Annie Elmley; Pam Wilcox — Bonnie Crockett; Andy White — Marshal Nate Dillman; Christie Cochran — News Editor Hanna Hanks; Tom Drew — Holleecowa Indian Chief Hawk Who Watches; Matt Palmer — Mayor Beauregard Brady; Brenda Devoe — saloon owner Cattie Adams; Gary Blackstone — banker Abraham Patton, Gene Bradbury – prospector Dusty Jones; Larry Harrison — J.P. James, a dime store novelist; and  Mark Hester — horse trader Flint Flames.
This was an interactive play and the dinner guests took part in solving the crime and seemed to truly enjoy questioning the suspects. A good crowd enjoyed watching the 12 “friends” of Dusty toast him with good feelings, and Dusty spoke highly of each as well. Some of the “good” sounded a bit like sarcasm but all was jovial.
When all was said and done, Marshal Nate Dillman, aka Andy White, put all the clues together and announced the killer, then promptly arrested J.P James, aka Larry Harrison, for the dastardly crime.
The Rotary thanks all who participated, giving them each a souvenir cactus plant and some ‘gold’ from a chocolate mine. Those attending all noted the excellence of the meal and that they hope another play can be done some other time.
Special Rotary award
The Paul Harris Fellowship Award, named after the founder of Rotary in 1905, was presented at a Rotary function on Saturday, May 9, in Washburn. The award is the first one given by the club to a non-Rotarian, but it was more than deserving due to the efforts this individual put forth and the contributions he has made to the towns of Washburn, Perham and Wade.
The coveted award was given to Lyman Sperry for his valuable participation to the Rotary-sponsored Boy Scout program locally, including leadership for many years in campouts, teaching skills, National Jamboree trips, building the troop camp, making bus repairs and support and contributions to the Friends of Troop 177 Corporation.
Lyman’s wife, Velma, was given a floral bouquet and thanked for her support of Lyman’s work with the Scouts and other community projects.
The Washburn club donated $1,000 to the Rotary International Program for the Annual Programs Fund, which includes support to many humanitarian and educational programs worldwide.
