Nine teams were involved in the single-elimination tournament, which started on Aug. 3 and was completed Aug. 5. Teams participating were Ashland, Presque Isle, Mapleton, Mars Hill, Limestone, Fort Fairfield, Van Buren, Madawaska and Caribou.
Van Buren, Caribou, Madawaska and Limestone each advanced to the semi-finals. Caribou defeated Van Buren, while Madawaska stopped Limestone to move into the championship game. In the finals, Madawaska prevailed, 11-5.
Madawaska got a great jump on Caribou in the first inning by scoring five times. However, Caribou never gave up as Dustin Bouchard singled and scored an unearned run in the fourth to get his team on the scoreboard.
Madawaska managed to get a few more runs and led 11-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Caribou started to make a comeback by scoring four runs in the sixth, but got no closer and had to settle for runners-up trophy to the champions from Madawaska.
Matt Manter had a single and a triple with an RBI to lead the Caribou offense, while Bouchard, Dayne Savage and Michael Hunter contributed two singles apiece.
Austin Griffeth and Connor Thibeault both added a single and an RBI and Riley McDuffie had the team’s other hit.
