The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s basketball teams both earned home wins on Saturday afternoon over Sunrise Conference opponent Paul Smith’s College of New York in games played at Wieden Gymnasium.
On the women’s side, the Lady Owls earned the 84-26 victory over PSC improving to 4-1 in conference play and 4-10 overall. Freshman guard Kallie Pelletier of Madawaska had a career and game-high night in scoring with 28 points on a 13-for-21 shooting effort. She also finished with five steals in the game.
Emily Moore of Lisbon added 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a career-high nine assists while not committing a turnover in her 25 minutes of play. Logahn Walker of Strong added six points and nine assists.
Presque Isle native Chris Coffin earned a double-double on the day, scoring 18 points, including 4 for 7 from behind the arc, and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Owls toppled Paul Smith’s College 86-72.
Junior guard Devon Peaslee of Woolwich finished with 18 points, while Patrick Manifold of Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom and Ray Mitchell of Cleveland, Ohio both added 14 points in the UMPI win. Kyle Corrigan of Caribou dished out a career-best 11 assists to go along with his 10 points.
Paul Smith’s was led by Ryan Hingston, who finished with a game-high 29 points.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team placed four players in double-digit scoring to earn the 79-74 conference win over the Roos of SUNY-Canton at home Friday. The game was a rematch of the 2009 semifinal contest between the two teams, where UMPI earned the same result.
Freshman shooting guard Emily Pelletier of Fort Kent led all scorers with a career-high 19 points, including five three-point field goals. Junior captain Megan Korhonen of Littleton, ME) finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while teammate Julie Peers of Caswell continued her solid play with 16 points, 12 of those coming in the first half. Peers also pulled down six rebounds.
The UMPI men earned a key 94-90 win over SUNY-Canton that same evening.
The Owls placed an impressive five players in double-digit scoring. Manifold led all scorers with a 24-point effort from the floor, earning his second double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Coffin had another strong outing, scoring 18 points and handing out five assists. Corrigan had 10 assists and 11 points, hitting six of his eight free throw attempts.
Last Wednesday, the UMPI teams traveled to Fort Kent, with the women falling by a 74-65 score and the men dropping an 84-72 decision.
Korhonen had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Owl women, while Corrigan scored 17 points and had nine assists and Coffin 13 points and 10 boards to pace the Owl men.
Both teams return to action at home Saturday, Jan. 30 as they host the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias for Sunrise Conference matchups. The women tip off at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 3 p.m.
The men also host Vermont Tech Sunday at 2 p.m.
