General Services Administration ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) Executive Gianne Conard has announced the beginning of a 30-day comment period on the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed new Land Port of Entry (LPOE) in Van Buren. The EA is available for review at the Abel J. Morneault Memorial Library at 153 Main Street in Van Buren. The EA has considered the impacts that would result from the federal construction and discussed mitigation of the impacts. The project would include the construction of a new LPOE at the international boundary with Canada in Van Buren with funding from ARRA. The new LPOE would provide Customs and Border Protection with an updated facility that would satisfy current and future security, operational and mission requirements.
The existing LPOE is located on a 2.5-acre parcel of land. Construction of the new facility would require the acquisition of approximately 18 acres of land adjacent to the existing LPOE. New structures are anticipated to contain approximately 44,000 square feet and would occupy approximately 10 acres of developed area.
