It was the last day of school before winter vacation, two days before Valentine’s Day, the afternoon prior to the annual Sweetheart Dance and the Pre-k and Kindergarten students at Hilltop Elementary School couldn’t have been happier. It really didn’t seem to matter that the mountain of snow (in years past, a gigantic mountain) for sliding was a bit meager this year or that some of the other outside winter activities weren’t available( due to the lack of snow) — there is just nothing like an outside hotdog roast and hot cocoa after expending a tremendous amount of energy playing outside.

Landon Thompson and his Dad Bryan did a bit of sliding and shared a lunch of hotdogs and cocoa during a recent afternoon event at Hilltop Elementary School.
The afternoon event, a favorite with students, parents and staff each year, proves that kids really do understand that you make do with what you have. The lack of snow didn’t damper the spirits of the young sliders. With the air filled with laughter, shouts and the aroma of hotdogs being grilled, the biggest decision came from deciding whether it was easier to eat a hotdog with or without one’s mittens on.

Wendy Landes shared an afternoon of sliding, hotdogs and cocoa with her son Matthew and an unidentified school pal at Hilltop Elementary School. The afternoon event was made even more special by the mere fact that it was the last day of school before winter vacation.
