100 Years Ago-June 8, 1910
Aroostook Times

    Ludlow — The social held at the home of Robert O’Donnell on Friday evening was a decided success in spite of the inclemency of the weather. There was a good crowd and the baskets sold well, one going for $3. The total sum realized was $24, which will be used for repairs on the church and parsonage.

CLASS OF 2010 — Houlton’s John Millar is surrounded by Houlton Elementary School kindergarten students from Mrs. Wilson, Miss Cowperthwaite and Mrs. McLaughlin’s classes. “Make a Difference Day” was October 25 and to observe the event, Millar gave 87 shirts to SAD 29’s Houlton kindergarten students, 10 to Littleton students, 16 to Monticello and 16 to Greater Houlton Christian Academy kindergartners.

    Houlton — Clough & Taggett are moving the ell of the Cushing house to a lot on Elm Street below the Russell house and will make it into a tenement. G.W. Van Tasel is doing the work.
    Advertisement — One of the sights at the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad Station last week was a glorious red and gold advance advertising car for the 101 Ranch Real Wild West Show which will be in Houlton on June 24 at the Tenney grounds on the afternoon and evening of that day.
75 Years Ago-June 6, 1935

    Houlton — Possible allocation of $58,000 to Houlton and five adjacent towns for a rural electrification project is foreseen. This will affect Amity, Cary, Orient, Weston and Danforth, which towns are now without electric power-line service.
    Scout badges — Fourteen Scouts received badges. They included Paul Ayotte, Everett Porter, Phillip Conlogue, Clayton Berry, James Ward, Robert Huggard, Almon Hunter, Harold Hoskins, Hacker Putnam, David Stevens, Hedley Pheeney, Vernon Titcomb, Albert Wakefield and Robert Heath, Jr.
    Monticello — Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Good went to Bangor Thursday for the weekend. His place on the mail route was filled by the substitute Jesse Melvin.

    Benedicta — A feature of this years’ July Field Day will be the selection of “Miss Liberty” to reign as Queen of the Fourth at the Ball.
    Island Falls — A Talent Show was presented by the seventh and eighth grades in the gymnasium. Some of the participants were: tap dance, Sandra Newman; poem recitation, Mary Margaret Hunt; song, Elizabeth St. Germain, accompanist Darlene Porter; song and tap dance, Norma Jean Armstrong; skit, Cary Bishop, Skippy Botting; song, Steven Edwards; tap, Teddy Pettingill, Timmy Hathaway; dance, Janice Robertson, Suzanne Henry and piano solo, Candace Newman.
    Dyer Brook — The eighth grade will visit Mt. Desert Island and leave on the Blue Nose Ferry for Nova Scotia. They will be chaperoned by Rev. Rae Cameron and their teacher, Mrs. Leonard Lougee. Taking the trip will be, Marsha Boutilier, Camilla Slauenwhite, Dennis Drew, David McLaughlin, Terry Beers, Brian McNelly, Edwin McNelly and Dale Hastey.
    Rotary speaker — John Hess, general counsel for the B&A Railroad was guest speaker this week. He was introduced by Palmer Swales, program chairman. Hess spoke on the subject of “Corporate reorganization of the B&A Railroad.”

    Teacher contract — Superintendent William McDonnell announced that the starting salary for a teacher with a four-year degree will be $11,500 and for a five-year degree, $12,650.
    County Democrat honored — United States Senator George Mitchell will join with citizens from throughout Aroostook County in recognizing Mrs. Jean Larson, one of Aroostook’s most active Democrats during the past three decades.
    Miss Houlton — Eight young ladies will vie for the title of Miss Greater Houlton. Contestants are, Tammy Foster, Susan York, Amanda Dunphy, Colleen Cassidy, Rhonda Dow, Jane Farrar, Jo Anna Bradford and Jennifer Hutchinson.
    Lamplight nails — Julie Fitzpatrick, owner of Julie’s Beauty World in Hodgdon, has recently attended school to learn the technique of lamplight nails. The process involves gluing nail tips on the human nail, filing and shaping before applying four coats of sealer and then a polish. Each coat is applied under a black light.
    Monticello — The Monticello Community Wesleyan Church observed its 50th anniversary with Pastor Steven Sinclair opening with a prayer. Former Pastor Walter Thompson spoke briefly as did the Rev. Ralph Ingersol, district superintendent.
