SACAP /Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project has supported the development of a local group of flourishing writers. The group has been meeting biweekly all spring and is getting ready to move into the summer.
The group ranges in age from 11 to those in their 70s. The group is made up of local students from Southside and Houlton Jr/Sr High, business owners, DHS employees, local professionals, retired teachers, farmers, beverage distributors, and the list goes on… The group meets every other week to share, write and encourage each other. In the room in the back of Visions Gallery they all become peers regardless of age or ability. The group has busy weeks and slow weeks but each week the focus is on developing and increasing one’s ability to share via the written word. Some share poems or short stories, some share excerps from the novel that has been in the works for years, others share spontaneous snippets from the works shared.
The purpose of the group is to support the literary arts in our community and provide a productive and nurturing venue for those in our community that want to write and need a little support.
Part of the mission of SACAP is to flourish the arts in the community and literacy and literature is part of the arts. The group has been very successful and is still taking more writers and looking to grow over the summer. The group will meet less frequently in the next months but will continue. As the school year approaches we would like to invite English teachers to become more involved and encourage those students in their classes to come and join us for additional enriching activities.
The group is here in Houlton to grow and nurture the potential poet or novelist in our community. For information about the group call Barbara Sutton at 532-9119.
