    Hodgdon — Geo. H. Benn is erecting a cottage at the Mill Pond.
    Letter B Road — A party of young people enjoyed a straw ride to Crescent Park one night recently. On returning one unfaithful chaperone was pierced by one of cupid’s darts and fell into a trance, losing his cap and reputation as a chaperone. Wanted, a faithful chaperone.

CCC REUNION — Five men from Houlton were among 700 former Civilian Conservation Corps men who met at the University of Southern Maine in Augusta for the first annual statewide CCC reunion.     Park bubble bursts — The prospects for a Park which last week seemed very bright have again disappeared. The owners of the Bird property were approached and regardless of sentiment made a price just double of what it was reported that it could be bought for and while we do not attempt to say that it is more than the property is worth, yet for the purpose of a Park it does not seem to be practical.

    Iota Sigma — The election of offices was held by the young women’s branch of the W.C.T.U. at the home of Mrs. Fred Hagan in Cary’s Mills. About 45 members were present. Mrs. Benjamin Sweet was re-elected president and the following vice-presidents: Mrs. Zemro Spooner, Mrs. Clyde Gardner, Mrs. Harry McGuire, Mrs. Horace Dickinson, Mrs. Chester Perry, Miss Evelyn Fogg and Mrs. D.C. Hazlett.
    Smyrna Mills — Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kilgore, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Reed are spending a week’s vacation at Dr. Tarbell’s cottage at Pleasant Pond.
50 Years Ago-July 28, 1960

    Miss Houlton — Several thousand watched as Carole Ivey was crowned at the Houlton coronation.
    Potato Feast — Officials state the Holton Potato Feast will be held again in 1961 after its first successful event this year..
    White Cane Day — Jack Ketch will be chairman of the drive for funds to support the glaucoma fight.
    Potato contests — The tractor derby was won by Eddie Benn of Houlton, second, Edward McDonald of Houlton and third Francis Fitzpatrick. The boys received $5, $4 and $3 in silver based on the selections by Judges Charles Wood, Mansfield London and Larry Tompkins.
    Big catch — Phil Foster of Houlton caught a 38-inch Atlantic salmon at Bath in the St. John River. It weighed 21 pounds.

    Cable TV — According to Norm Johnson of Houlton Cable TV Inc. there is a plan to increase the basic cable service. As of Sept. 1, the monthly rate for basic cable television will increase from $8.50 to $11. The new rate will include 10 channels plus five so-called premium channels.
    Fitzpatrick honored — J. Thomas Fitzpatrick was honored by Houlton Rotarians, being designated as a Paul Harris Fellow.
    Ludlow — Willie Lynds,, Wilbur Estabrook and Tom Follette of Wells had a week of fishing in Quebec.
    Houlton — The Houlton Retail Trade Board discussed Friday night promotions being offered by many retailers in the shopping district.
    Rainbow Girls — The Houlton Assembly during Memorial Day weekend met at the University of Maine Orono campus. Jo Anna Bradford received a $600 scholarship, Tabetha Foster and Kristi Mitchell returned their Grand Representative Banners. Robin Brackett became a Grand Representative to Australia and Tammy Shea became a Grand Representative to Germany.
