PRESQUE ISLE — A migrant worker is facing several charges, following an incident that occurred earlier this month in the Star City.
The Presque Isle Police Department received a report Aug. 15 from a local man requesting police investigate an incident at his home. The man told police he and his wife were at camp and that his daughters had remained home but later the younger of the two — indicated to be 19 years of age in the police log — arrived at camp and advised her father of a questionable situation back home. Police were advised several males had been at the home and were possibly still on site.

Officers Jeff Mechalko and Kevin Schumacher, both PIPD, responded to the residence but no one would answer the door. The homeowner was contacted and gave police permission to enter. The officers entered the home and found the older daughter, reported to be 36 years old, inside asleep but partially dressed. No one else was located. Officer Peter Johnson made contact with the local taxi companies to determine if anyone had called a cab from that location prior to police arriving.
Subsequent conversations with the man and his daughters revealed the younger daughter had been assaulted by a young male who’d identified himself as George (later determined to be spelled Jorge) and that the older sister may have also been assaulted.
The women described the man to police as a younger Hispanic male with a goatee and spiky short black hair. Police spoke with a taxi driver who indicated he’d given a man a ride from the area to a migrant camp in Caribou on the night in question.
Schumacher and a Border Patrol agent initially went to the camp but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect. The next day, Aug. 16, Schumacher located the man in Caribou. Following a foot chase, Schumacher and Caribou Police Officer Matherson were able to detain the suspect, identified as Jorge Campos, 26. Schumacher placed Campos under arrest and transported him to the PIPD. He was charged with attempted sexual contact, tampering with a victim, assault and unlawful touching. Bail was set at $3,000 cash or $50,000 surety and he was to have no contact with the 19-year-old. Campos was transported to the Aroostook County Jail, with a Superior Court date set for Oct. 21.
