Saturday fundraiser to benefit

There will be a special Farmer’s Market and Flea Market this Saturday, Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mapleton United Methodist Church. This is to help the church youth group make a trip to Indiana where they will be attending the National Methodist Youth Rally, which takes place every four years. The local fund-raising event will be held rain or shine, and you can reserve your table for $12 by phoning Mike Eaton at 764-3762 or Lisa Reed at 493-0989.
The 19-year-old son of Mike and Torry Eaton, has recently departed for his first year at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, with a major in marine systems engineering. Eaton will be participating in a training cruise, living on the 500-foot State of Maine vessel for the next five weeks. The first week will be orientation to the regiment of midshipmen and the following four weeks he will begin his classes. During the training ship familiarization program, all midshipmen will be assigned areas of responsibility in addition to being taught rowing, watch standing, problem solving and regimental organization. Eaton is a 2010 graduate of Presque Isle High School.

The Mapleton Daze Committee is now taking orders for its annual community birthday calendars. Each calendar is $7, which includes five listings. Each additional listing after the first five is 50 cents each. Listings include birthdays, anniversaries, and in memory of a loved one. The deadline to order is Sept. 20. Mapleton Cub Scout Pack 170 will be holding its annual round-up for new Scouts Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the Mapleton Lions Club at 7 p.m. Any child that is interested in joining must be at least 6 years old and entering first grade. Any family looking to have fun and learn more about Scouting should plan to attend. Scouting is a very rewarding venture for not only children, but for adults, as well. Baptist Park in Mapleton will be sponsoring a Ladies Retreat Sept. 10-11 at the park. Jodie Hovda will be the weekend speaker. Hovda just recently returned from a trip to Malaysia, and Paulette Sherman will be leading worship. Can you remember the last time you had an uninterrupted chance to work on your most recent craft project? Do you scrapbook, stamp, knit, crochet, or quilt? Bring your latest project and enjoy some time to work on it with others. If you don’t have a project started, scrapbooking and stamping supplies will be available to make your own cards. The United Methodist Church will be hosting its weekly luncheon Friday, Aug. 27 at 11:30 a.m. There is no charge for the luncheon, but donations are accepted. All are welcome to attend.
