Where in the USA is Ray?

MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

Ray and Judy Mersereau are having a wonderful trip and are currently — as of Aug. 17 — at Yellowstone National Park.  They started their trip off on Aug. 3, and stopped at Hampton Beach, N.H., so Ray could put his feet in the Atlantic Ocean. I think that this means he plans on dipping them again in the Pacific at some — but time will tell.

RAY MERSEREAU found a friendly wild mule to feed during he and his wife's time in South Dakota.

They spent a few days in Massachusetts with their family (I must note here that their daughter-in-law’s name is Janie, not Janice) before heading to the Rochester, N.Y., area to spend some time with the Andersons — former classmates from ACI.  They left New York on Aug. 10 and headed west. They saw a sign in the Erie, Penn., area for Presque Isle State Park, so they stopped in for a visit. They drove around the park, and then enjoyed a bike ride on some beautiful paved bike paths.
After a good night’s sleep, they traveled around 500 miles to the Utica, Ill., area. The next day, they decided to head north, looking for cooler weather! They saw some huge wind farms along the way as well as field after field of corn.
Continuing west on Route 90 through Wisconsin, they saw more fields of corn as well as some fields of sunflowers. They crossed the Mississippi River into Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 12, and on Friday the 13th continued west to Mitchell, S.D. Continuing west to Hermosa, S.D., they set up camp for a few days.
They enjoyed many sites in western South Dakota, including the Corn Palace and Custer State Park, where they saw buffalo, pronghorns and a herd of whitetail deer as well as some wild mules. They also visited Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial and Bear Country USA, where they also saw many kinds of wild animals. For lunch, they tried a buffalo burger but are not putting it on their list of favorite foods! They also took the time to play a round of golf in Deadwood, S.D., on Monday.
The scenery is very different as they head west, but they are looking forward to getting to Yellowstone to see even more spectacular sights. Sounds like they are having a wonderful time! Stay tuned to this column for further updates on their travels.

JUDY DRIVES FOR AWHILE — In Wall Drup, S.D., tired of the pick-up, Judy Mersereau decided to take the reigns for awhile on their trip around the USA. Ray is in the back of the wagon — I wonder if he was giving directions?
