Morgan Swan of the Vikings comes out to attempt a save on Old Town’s Meagan Cousins Saturday. Cousins scored on the play, but Caribou still went on to a 4-2 victory.
On Thursday at Madawaska, the Vikes recorded a sweep in the season series against the Owls.
Caribou made an early statement on the road as Olivia Sleeper scored just 33 seconds into the contest to give her team the 1-0 advantage. Jenna Selander had the assist.
The score remained the same until Sleeper clinched the victory by scoring with six minutes left.
Caribou held a 19-6 shot advantage, with Morgan Swan saving four for the shutout.
“We had good opportunities, but had trouble finishing in this game,” Viking coach Todd Albert said. “The wet field made passing difficult, but were were able to pull out the win.”
Two days later, back home against Old Town, Selander and Sleeper again figured prominently in the scoring as the Vikes were victorious.
Selander scored two first-half goals and Sleeper had both of hers in the second half. Jamie Martin picked up three assists for Caribou.
Albert was pleased with the team’s defense against Katie Deshane of the Coyotes, who is regarded as one of the top scorers in Eastern Maine.
“We were able to double her when they had the ball,” Albert said. “Our defense also did a good job winning numerous balls out of the air. I was proud of the effort.”
