100 Years Ago-Oct. 26, 1910

Local — The waters of Nickerson, Cochran and Drews’ lakes and “B” Pond were stocked last week with 8,000 one-year-old salmon and 9,000 fry from the Caribou Hatchery. The work was in charge of L.E. Alley of the above named Hatchery. Those fish will be protected and in about three years the angler who casts a hook in these waters will be amply rewarded.
For sale — Chas. D. Merritt will sell his family horse, which he has owned for the past 10 years, for less than her value to some one who would keep her for their family driving. No others need apply.

75 Years Ago-Oct. 24, 1935


    Local Harriers — The Stinson coached runners of Houlton High continued their winning streak by defeating the strong cluster from Aroostook Central Institute by the comfortable margin of 20-36.
Molunkus — A shocking double tragedy occurred Sunday afternoon at Molunkus Lake when Burns Bragdon, 63, and his grandson Phillip Clark, 9, both of Sherman Mills were killed by the delayed explosion of a charge of dynamite. Mr. Bragdon had set a heavy charge of dynamite beneath a rock and started the fuse. He waited a full 15 minutes for the charge to explode, witnesses said and when it failed to go off, started toward the rock to investigate. His grandson ran along behind him and when they neared the rock, the charge exploded.

50 Years Ago-Oct. 27, 1960

Local doctor — Funeral services were held Wednesday for Dr. Penry Leigh Blake Ebbett, 79, one of the Houlton’s most prominent physicians, who had practiced in Houlton for the past 57 years, opening his first office in 1903.

Nearing completion — The church of the Full Gospel Assembly is nearing completion off the Calais Road in Houlton. Rev. Clarence Reed said services would be held in the new edifice sometime in the latter part of November.
Oakfield — The Firemen have reported a very successful event at their Hunters’ Supper, which they sponsored. The lucky nimrod who received the gun, which has been on raffle, was Keith Greenlaw. Other lucky names drawn were Marion Collins of Houlton, Leonard Lougee of Island Falls, Bliss Small of Smyrna, Ken Swallow, Edward Levesque, Claude Brannen, Darrell Porter, Mrs. Fred Rideout and Alfred Brannen.

25 Years Ago-Oct. 23, 1985

Honored — The Aroostook County Legal Secretaries Association honored John O. Rogers, Esquire, of the firm of Barnes & Sylvester in Houlton for his 50th year at the Maine State Bar.
Recognized — Dr. John B. Madigan of Houlton was recognized for 30 years of continued membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Winner — Barbara Rush, 28, won the women’s title at the 16th Seattle Marathon, finishing 98th overall out of 535 runners at 3:05:58. Barbara is a University of Washington graduate student in business. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rush.
Classmates meet — A classmate get-together consisted of Velora Black of Amity, Mildred Bagnall and Ethel Sloat of Houlton, Reta Wotton and Cora Nicholson of Littleton at the latter’s home. The afternoon was spent chatting and reminiscing of their school days at Ricker Classical Institute during the years of 1922 to 1926.
