Trunk or Treat takes place Sunday

EASTON NEWS

by Debbie Smith

Trunk or Treat will be held at the Easton Wesleyan Church on Halloween, Oct. 31, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There will be lots of carnival games, prizes, food, crafts, carnival cops and a magic show put on by Pastor Rob. Then children will have an opportunity to collect candy from car trunks in the parking lot. This is a fun activity for the entire family. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Travelers

Mike, Donna and Jeremy Corey enjoyed a trip this fall to Jamestown, N.Y., to visit their son, Shawn and his wife Christina and their two children, to celebrate a birthday. On their way they stopped at the Big E in Springfield, Mass., to spend a couple of days. On their way home they stopped to visit with Scott and Glenice Fuller in Wells.

Benefit supper a success

On Oct. 16, there was a benefit supper held at the Odd Fellow’s Hall in Easton for Jayme Scanlin. Over 200 people were fed a spaghetti supper that consisted of spaghetti, green salad, roll and brownie ala mode for dessert. It was on a donations basis. Jayme was able to attend along with his family members. Jayme has come a long way in the last few months after having a stroke. We wish him continued recovery and the very best. Thanks to all who helped with the food and the young people that served the meal. Also, thanks to all who attended and made this event a big success.

Harvest party

The annual harvest party will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30th from 2-4 p.m. at the Easton Elementary School. Activities will include the cake walk, bouncy house and tons of games. Admission is a can of soup to be donated to the Friends Helping Friends Food Pantry. Help would be greatly appreciated in setting up Friday after school until 6:30 p.m., as well as cleaning up after the party. We are asking families to send small toys (Burger King and McDonald’s size) to school to be used as game prizes at this event.

Box Tops

Once again, EPCO will collect General Mills Box Tops for Education. Students are asked to collect Box Tops in an envelope or baggie with their name, grade and number of tops included. At the end of the year students who collect the most Box Tops will win a fabulous prize.

Hannaford helps schools

More information will be available soon about the Hannaford store program. Between now and Dec. 5, we will collect Hannaford (Grave’s Shop N’ Save) receipts for participating products. A coupon will print with your receipt. Feel free to drop your receipts in the box labeled “ Easton” at Graves, or send them in to school with your child. We can use the coupons from other Hannaford stores if you have family or friends that shop these stores as well.

Office items recycled

A box in the main office at the elementary school is available to drop off old cartridges and cell phones for recycling.

Fundraising

We have found a new fundraising program from Tyson. Just save two top strips from the box or bag with the ‘A’ label, and send them to school.

Cookbooks

The EPCO & Friends cookbook is on sale right now for $5 or two for $10. They can be found at the elementary school or other locations.

Christmas Bazaar

Last year’s shopping event for the children to purchase inexpensive gifts for family members went over so well that we are holding it again this year. This year we are asking people to donate items that could be used as gifts — handmade or other re-gifted items are perfect.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the elementary school. As usual, child care will be provided. Remember, you don’t have to have an elementary student to be a part of EPCO. We would love to have new members. Whatever amount of time you can offer we would greatly appreciate. And you don’t have to make a huge time commitment to be part of the fun.
Don’t forget to find us on the school website or drop us an e-mail at epco@eastonschooldistrict.org.

Kiwanis Club meets

The Easton Kiwanis Club met on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with six members and a guest present. The flag salute and prayer were given before the pizza and salad supper. President Mike Allen opened the meeting after the evening meal, stating that this was the beginning of the 18th year for the Easton Kiwanis Club and that it was the 12th edition of the Kiwanis Calendar, which was sent to the printers on Sept. 30.
There was discussion about the benefit supper for Jayme Scanlin held on Oct. 16. Jayme suffered a severe stroke several weeks ago but is now improving quite well. The Future Farmers Association members and the Key Club members will act as servers.
Mike reminded the members that there is need to clean up a room in the basement of the Hall and put some shelves for storage up.
During this meeting Mike explained the workings of the Kiwanis to their guest, Herbert Demerchant. Others attending were: Loris and Mike Allen, Barbara Blackstone, Mike Cyr and Clair and Eldora Carter.
At the next meeting the guest speaker will be Rick Duncan who will talk on mortuary information, and the second meeting in November the speaker will be President Don Zillman of the University of Maine in Presque Isle.
On the last meeting of the Easton Kiwanis Club there were 12 members present and the talk was about the reason for the setup committees and the Christmas subjects. The Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, with a Yankee Swap. Membership was discussed.
The dues are $100 but if anyone would like to help the Kiwanis with their mission projects they would be welcomed. The president said that they are in need of a good secondhand canopy, 20-foot by 20-foot and two pop-up ones, 10-foot by 10-foot. They do not own anything except their tents but there is need for a grill, some tables and coolers. It was suggested that money from the calendar sales might be used to purchase the items. It was moved and seconded that they do this.
There was discussion on the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets before the meeting closed. Those present at this meeting were: Mike and Loris Allen, Mike Cyr, Jeremy Corey, Barbara Blackstone, Harold Clark, Bernard Hussey, Tom and Ann Osgood, lair and Eldora Carter and Irene DaFonte.

Soccer season ends

Soccer season has come to an end and we all know what this means, winter isn’t far away. We would like to thank the Easton Lady Bears and the Easton Bears for the exciting games you played this year. It was truly a delight to watch you all play your hearts out. Thanks. Now we will continue to watch you give all you have at the basketball games. Can’t wait for them to start. You are all a great group of young people that we as a community are very proud of. Keep up the great work in the upcoming basketball season and we will be there cheering you on. Go Bears, Yay! Give me an ‘E’ …
