The first Alpine ski meet of the season finally took place Saturday at Fort Kent’s Lonesome Pine Trials, with the host Warriors sweeping both the morning and afternoon slalom sessions for girls and boys.

The Caribou girls were second and the PI girls third, while the PI boys placed second and the Caribou boys third in the overall standings.

Viking skiers Laura Collins and Lydia Kieffer had a one-two finish in the girls’ morning event. Collins fashioned a winning time of 1:38, while Kieffer came in at 1:43.09.

Ginger Kiffer of Caribou took sixth place in 1:53.99, while teammates Jessica Zyblut (2:14.71) and Regan Buck (2:21.49) were 13th and 14th, respectively out of 24 total skiers.

Emma Bartlett led Presque Isle and placed seventh overall in 1:54.96. JoLonna Gough of the Wildcats turned in a 12th-place performance in 2:13.83.

During the afternoon runs, Collins again was the winner in 1:36.2, while Ginger Kieffer took second place in 1:39.62. Lydia Kieffer was ninth in 1:53.03 and Zbylut was 10th in 1:55.47, while Buck was 14th in 2:07.97 and Mary Jo Sheehan 15th in 2:16.52.

For the Wildcat girls, Bartlett took sixth in 1:46.43, while Chelsea Carroll turned in a time of 2:03.82, good for 12th place. Gough was 13th in 2:04.66.

In the morning boys’ slalom competition, Logan Doak of Fort Kent took first place out of 34 competitors with a time of 1 minutes, 25.72 seconds for his two runs.

Logan Brewer of Central Aroostook was the runner-up in 1:27.83 and Spencer Stetson of CAHS was fourth in 1:32.89.

Fort Fairfield’s Nate McLaughlin grabbed the seventh position with a time of 1:41.58, while also cracking the top 10 were Presque Isle’s Matt Sullivan in ninth in 1:46.74 and Caribou’s Sean Barbosa in 10th in 1:49.9.

Others making the top 20 for PI wer Jacob Towle in 13th in 1:51.25, Thomas Freeman 17th in 1:57.85 and Kyle MacCallum 20th in 2:02.31.

For the Vikings, Dylan Ouellette placed 11th in 1:51 and Matt Lulofs 19th in 2:01.44.

Doak also led the way in the afternoon thanks to a time of 1:19.72 for his two runs.

Central Aroostook’s Brewer and Stetson again were near the top, as Brewer’s time was 1:24.99 for third place and Stetson’s was 1:28.62, placing him fourth.

Towle was 10th in 1:48.15, Freeman 13th in 1:52.6, MacCallum 14th in 1:52.92, Sullivan 16th in 1:54.15 and Gabe Player 18th in 2:02.16 to pace the Wildcats.

Fort Fairfield’s McLaughlin was 12th in 1:49.66.

Leading Caribou was Kevin Strid, who placed 15th in the standings in 1:53.69. Barbosa claimed the 17th slot in 1:57.47 and Dean Walker just made it into the top 20 with his time of 2:03.7.

Alpine teams will be competing this Saturday at Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill beginning at 9 a.m.

Nordic teams were off this past week but are planning to make the trip to Caribou Thursday for races which start at 5:30 p.m.
