The Northern Region of the Maine Sports Legends is once again awarding $500 scholarships to one male and one female from the Aroostook County area, and local students are encouraged to begin the application process as the deadline is May 10.
The Maine Sports Legends is a state-wide organization dedicated to honoring outstanding scholar-athletes who have met the prescribed standards in academics, has participated in their school’s varsity athletic programs along with possessing good character, completed community and civic involvement and shows strong leadership ability.
This scholarship will be awarded solely on the basis of the student’s credentials and shall be made without regard to financial need. There will be eight $500 scholarships awarded state-wide. In addition, two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to the top male and female chosen by a committee the day of the banquet from the eight state-wide scholar-athletes.
Last year, Kelsey Park of Presque Isle High School and Samuel Chasse from Fort Kent Community High School were the scholarship recipients. Park also received the additional $1,000 Beaudry Scholarship Award.
McCain Foods of Easton and Katahdin Trust Company have been major scholarship donors and many other local businesses and individuals in Aroostook County have provided various financial donations to the scholarship program over the past years. The Northern Region of Sports Legends is looking forward to continuing this relationship with local businesses and individuals for 2011 scholarships and in the future.
Businesses which would like to discuss being a scholarship donor or give a financial donation, which will be acknowledged in the annual Maine Sports Legends banquet program booklet and be distributed state-wide, should contact Robert White at 498-2796 or Sue Lougee at 762-1741.
