The State Police responded to New Sweden last week to investigate the whereabouts of a missing New Sweden man. It had been reported that 80-year-old Keith Nelson was missing after his unoccupied vehicle was found off the roadway at the intersection of the Bondeson and Westmanland road in New Sweden.

On Aug. 17 at 7:15 a.m. Trooper Flynn responded to a report of a vehicle off the road in the ditch in New Sweden. The vehicle was determined to belong to Nelson.

A search was conducted by the Maine State Police and the Maine Warden Service of the area, after learning that Nelson had been missing all night. After a thorough search of the immediate area by foot and use of a State Police canine unit, Nelson was not located and a fixed wing aircraft was called in to assist in locating the elderly male.

Prior to the arrival of the aircraft and another canine unit, at 11:25 a.m., a motorist spotted the New Sweden man standing up in the field one mile away from the crash site.

After leaving his vehicle Nelson had become disoriented, walking approximately three miles before being found. He was transported to Cary Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.
