Of 20 public housing authorities in Maine selected to receive Housing and Urban Development funds, three of them are in the Central Aroostook region.

Shaun Donovan, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), announced on Feb. 10 that Maine has been awarded more than $5 million in funding that will be used to make major large-scale improvements to their public housing units.

The Van Buren Housing Authority was awarded $125,131, the Fort Fairfield Housing Authority was awarded $111,668 and the Presque Isle Housing Authority was awarded $263,603.

According to HUD officials, the grants were provided through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which provides annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize the public housing in their communities.

Nationwide, a total of $1,792,056,016 in HUD funds were awarded.
