The Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawks dropped their only contest last week falling to No. 1 Brewer, 9-2, on the road.
The game started out very even as the Black Hawks had perhaps their best period of the year, said Houlton-Hodgdon coach Joel Trickey.
Brewer took the lead at the 11:31 mark, but the Black Hawks answered on a power-play goal by Alex Donovan, with assists going to Brandon Ward and Sam Fitzpatrick. After the Witches took another lead the Black Hawks again tied the score with Fitzpatrick netting the second goal, assisted by Brandon Malone.
“The second period showed why Brewer is number one in Eastern Maine,” said Trickey.
The Witches came out and scored four goals to take a 6-2 lead into the third. While the period was very well played and the Black Hawks held their own, the experience of Brewer’s eight seniors showed as they finished very well and turned up their skating to create more scoring chances, Trickey explained.
In the third, the Black Hawks uncharacteristically took several penalties, effectively losing any chance to get back into the game. Brewer tacked on three more goals for the final tally.
“The kids did a great job in the first two periods of this game and once again reached a new level in their understanding of the high school game,” Trickey said. “With the season winding down, we’re extremely happy with the progress the team has made and think that next year will be another successful season.”
The Black Hawks will host Old Town tonight at 6 p.m., with their final home game Monday at 2 p.m. against Hampden at the Millar Civic Center. The Black Hawks will finish the season next Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Winslow.
