Oh, for the love of books

Traditionally, the March 2 birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss has been celebrated by elementary school children all over the United States. As a Washburn District high school librarian, Londa Brown marked his birthday with the reading of one of his famous quotes from one of his books. However, realizing that high school students still cling to their childhood love of Dr. Seuss through their artwork, their use of his ideas and words in their essays, and their appreciation of receiving his book “Oh the Places You’ll Go” when they graduate, she decided to pursue a project for high school students. Collaborating with ELA teacher Ms. Flagg, who also offers a fine arts class, they created edible books for Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

The recipe and idea comes from the Hungry Happenings website: www.hungryhappenings.com/2011/05/how-to-create-school-books-using-corn.html.

They received a $50 Read Across America grant for the ingredients for the construction of the edible books. The day before they made the books, each English class spent the period looking through all of the Dr. Seuss books, finding their favorite from their childhood and deciding on a quote to use in the display.

While the edible book construction was taking place, some of the younger students from the elementary school came to see what was happening. They were just amazed that the big high school students still like Dr. Seuss.

In saying good-bye each year to graduates, friends, family and school staff can say along with Dr. Seuss:

“And will you succeed?

Yes! You will, indeed!

(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

Kid, you’ll move mountains!

So…

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray

or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,

you’re off to Great Places!

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting.

So…get on your way!”
