LIMESTONE — Maine School of Science and Mathematics student Klaas Pruiksma of Lewiston has been selected as the winner of a 2012 National Merit Scholarship. Announced on May 4 by the school’s executive director Luke Shorty, Pruiksma will be presented with a letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

“MSSM is very proud that Klaas’ dedication, focus and admirable academic achievements have been recognized,” Shorty said. “I am certain this is only the first of such honors for this talented young man.”

According to MSSM officials, there were approximately 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program; about 16,000 were named semifinalists and 15,000 named finalists.

Only 8,300 students throughout the nation were awarded the 2012 National Merit Scholarship.
