SACS announces 2012 honor parts

    DYER BROOK — Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2012.
    Morgan Gustin has been named valedictorian, Jessica Charest is salutatorian, Vance Gustin is first honor essayist and Taylor Locke is second honor essayist.

Valedictorian

    Morgan Gustin is the daughter of Randy and Lynn Gustin of Merrill. She is a member of the SACS Band, playing piano and trumpet, a member of the varsity soccer team and the National Honor Society. She is also active in Dollars for Scholars.
    Morgan Gustin is a committed member of her church, youth group and Monday night Bible study. She enjoys horseback riding and bicycling and she is currently training for the American Lung Association’s 180-mile Trek Across Maine. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She waitresses at A Place to Eat. Her honors/awards include being named state winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, Girl’s State and Maine Youth Leadership delegate, National Merit Commended Student, 2012 Maine Principal’s Award recipient, and most recently was the recipient for the NASSP/Herf Jones Principal’s Leadership award for a $1000 scholarship.
    Gustin plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono in the fall pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences, with a possible minor in equine studies. She will also be a member of U Maine’s Honor College.

Salutatorian

    Charest is the daughter of Michael and Gail Charest of Island Falls. Her athletic activities have included varsity softball and varsity soccer. She has been a member of the Varsity Club, National Honor Society, and band. She was chosen by staff and students for Student of the Quarter and placed first in the Science Fair her freshman year. Charest has been named to the honor roll throughout high school.
    Charest is undecided with her plans after graduation.

First honor essayist

    Vance Gustin is the son of Randy and Lynn Gustin of Merrill. His extra-curricular activities have included varsity soccer, baseball and basketball. He has been active in Dollars for Scholars, is a member the National Honor Society. He has worked/volunteered in the After-School Program, has worked on the Prom Committee.
    Vance Gustin has been to the Trout Unlimited Trout Camp and participated in the Meduxnekeag Canoe race. He is a member of the church worship team. His honors/awards include a delegate to Boys State, the Wendy Heisman State finalist, the Pulp and Paper scholar, Explore Engineering at     UMO participant, and First Wind Scholar.
    He plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He would also like to pursue his doctorates in chemical engineering at UMO or Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After achieving his educational goals, he hopes to work in a research laboratory in fields relating to alternate energy sources or chemical synthesis reactions.

Second honor essayist

    Locke is the son of Kevin and Cheryl Locke of Oakfield. His athletic activities include varsity soccer, baseball and basketball. Locke has served as president of his class, is president of Varsity Club, a member of the National Honor Society and Dollars for Scholars. He has been chosen Student of the Quarter by staff and students. Locke has volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Drive. He was most recently voted selectman for the town of Oakfield. He enjoys being active in politics and also enjoys golf.
    Locke’s honors/awards include the Phi Beta Kappa certificate of recognition for high academic standards, Boys State delegate, and most recently, the recipient of the Scholar Athlete award.
    Locke will attend the University of Maine at Orono in the fall majoring in business administration, with a minor in political science.
