WOODLAND — Roughly 50 elders from the community and beyond attended Senior Citizens’ Day at the Woodland Consolidated School on May 1, spending time with their grandchildren and enjoying talented performances by the students.

Principal Susie Schloeman said that the event is an annual tradition, held on the first Tuesday of May since long before her tenure at the school.

Woodland youths entertained their guests of honor by demonstrating dances they learned in phys ed class by teaching principal Schloeman and sang songs they learned by music teacher Jennifer Holmes. Members of the school’s band even played their instuments for the occasion.
“I think it’s an opportunity for the students to be able to showcase some of the skills they’ve learned in phys ed and music and a chance to invite senior citizens and grandparents in to watch the kids perform,” Schloeman said. “It’s something the kids look forward to.”
After the students danced up an appetite, all enjoyed a turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and vegetables.
The guests of honor were each given a tomato plant after the Senior Citizen Day events concluded.
