Just my Mom and me

“You know, a lot of the young boys today think that it’s kind of cool to dance,” said Kathy Mazzuchelli, “I think it has something to do with all the music videos and television programs that have young dancers in them — and of course all these young moms are really good dancers.”

Stacey and Alex Wood, left, and Meagan Pelletier, holding her son Kyler Maleno, 3 1/2 months, joined in with the music and dancing at the May 11 Mother and Son Dance.

Mazzuchelli was speaking in reference to the recent tropical-themed Mother and Son Dance sponsored by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department. “Our Father/Daughter Dance always draws a huge crowd but the mother and son event isn’t always as well attended,” said Mazzuchelli, “but this year with the tropical theme we had 189 who participated and that’s just terrific.”

As the young gentlemen escorted their moms, aunts, sisters, grandmothers or best friends into the gymnasium, they were greeted with the sounds of irresistible dance music — from then until the end of the evening it was pure entertainment.

The young escorts were clad in an array of attire — everything from dress shirts, ties, creased khakis and shined shoes to the more laid back threads of madras plaid shorts (below the knee, if you please), cool (in the truest sense of style) loose-fitting printed shirts, boat shoes, sneakers or of course the most casual of footwear, sandals. Accessories covered the entire gambit, from Hawaiian leis, ‘shades’ and boutonnières to even a ‘binkie,’ sported by one very young dancer.

Regardless of their age or their style preference spending a special evening with one’s son is a memory not to be forgotten. As all moms recognize, in all too short of a time, their sons grow up and they find themselves replaced by another favorite lady but deep down they hug the thought that their son understands the special bond they have created over the years and that they will treasure for a lifetime.
