Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device – sometimes referred to as Motorized wheelchair, or Motorized scooter is the topic of this week’s HPD Corner. From time to time Houlton Police will receive a phone call, with safety concerns about a motorized scooter/wheelchair riding down the middle of the road causing traffic problems, or safety issues.
Maine Motor Vehicle Statutes 29A-2053 says, “Electric personal assistive device may operate on a public ways where speed limit is 35 MPH or less only where a sidewalk or bike path is unavailable. While doing this the operator shall ride as far as practicable to the right side of the way, except when making a left turn, and shall cross public ways using crosswalks where available.”
