LIMESTONE — After rediscovering a series of about 40 slides taken of Limestone places and scenes in 1982, Limestone’s Library staff decided to re-take the same community photos for 2012.
Once the then-and-now photos are finished being compiled by Librarian Rea Caldwell and Assistant Librarian Joanne Worthen, they plan to create a photo book for community members and history buffs alike to enjoy.
The wheels of the photo project first started turning last fall, when the Library received a grant from the Maine Historical Society to purchase a scanner. As Worthen and Caldwell began scanning old archived photos, they found a series of slides taken back in the early 1980s.
“There were about 40 slides or so, mostly of businesses and things,” Caldwell explained.
While she and Worthen will be photographing the same scenes from 1982, they’re also looking to expand the library’s collection of historic images by capturing photos of older homes in the community as well as pictures documenting the farming industry.
Though the project is expected to be completed and ready for viewing in early 2013, Caldwell and Worthen are trying to spread the word about the historic project now so that community members are not alarmed by their photography for the historic project.
