Mikaela Tuttle of Houlton, daughter of Craig Tuttle of Corpus Christi, Texas and Becky Tuttle of Houlton, has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. by U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins. To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes members of Congress.
“I am very proud of her,” said her mother, Becky. “She has worked hard to get this far in the process and I hope she gets in and fulfills her dream.”
Admission to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, also a federal service academy, does not require a congressional nomination.
“We are proud to have the honor to nominate such an impressive group of Maine students to our nation’s distinguished service academies,” said Sens. Snowe and Collins in a joint statement. “The young people we have nominated have earned this honor through a commitment to strong scholarship, leadership and character.”
Tuttle is a senior at Houlton High School.
Tuttle’s father, Craig, has retired from the U.S. Army and is “overjoyed at Mikaela’s nomination.”
“I am so proud of her accomplishments,” he said. “She has worked very hard to achieve her goals, and I am truly blessed to call her my daughter. She has grown into a very bright, beautiful and dedicated young woman.”
Tuttle is part of Houlton High School’s concert band, symphonic band, and is in the All-Aroostook Honors band. She has also been a cast member in the fall musical and is a cheerleader. In the past, she has been in chorus and show choir.
