Basketball action for grades 3-4 players continued in the Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department league offered at the William Haskell Community Center.
In boys’ play, Duke and UConn went head to head with Duke’s Jacob Smith scoring all eight of his team’s points in an 8-2 victory. Jordan Wood scored UConn’s lone basket.
In game two of the day, Florida and Notre Dame faced off, with Mason Fletcher scoring 18 points and Chance Bragan adding 10 in the 28-20 win. Braedon Sargent scored 18 and Mathew Butler added a bucket for Florida. In the nightcap. North Carolina was hitting on all cylinders in a 37-2 victory over Indiana. Jacob Devine led the way with 14 points, followed by Damon Van Houten with 11 and the two bigs, Holden Stoutamyer and Cody Barnes, contributing six each. Indiana’s Jude Mosher made a late fourth-quarter basket to prevent his team from being shut out.
In girls’ action, the Black Bears and Terriers hit the hardwood. Faith Sjoberg had a game-high eight points, with Rhylee Kinney adding a hoop in the Bears’ 10-8 triumph. Meg Casavant scored six and Jenna Sargent two for the Terriers.
Sargent had a game-high 13 points for Florida and Asher Tuttle and Jackson Maynard had six and five, respectively, for the Gators in a game that ended in a 15-15 tie.
Duke’s Gage LeTourneau led the way with eight points and Xavier McAtee added six as Duke bested Notre Dame, 14-10. Zack Jalbert and Fletcher had four each for Notre Dame.
The final game of 2012 showcased UNC and UConn. UNC had been on a roll and it continued with Barnes scoring a game-high 12 points for the victors. Devine followed with eight and Ben Ryan had four for the winners. UConn’s Wood scored the lone basket for UConn, who fell, 26-2.
In a great battle on the girls’ side, the Terriers and Huskies battle it out. Hattie Bubar had a game-high six points, with Izabelle Higgins chipping in with two. The Terriers were led by Madison Hedrich with four, while Sargent and Kayla Williams both added a basket in the game which ended in an 8-8 tie.
The next day was a doubleheader for the Black Bears and Huskies. In the first game, the Bears’ Sjoberg had a team-high of 13 points, with Hannah Hyde adding four and McKenna Brown two. On the other side of the court, Bubar notched a season-high 13 points with Macie Bartley adding four, but the Black Bears prevailed, 19-17. In game two, the Black Bears stayed consistent by scoring another 19 points. Bethany Baker led the way with 10 points in the 19-10 win. Bubar and Emily Bemis scored four points each for the Huskies.
In more boys’ action, Duke got past Indiana, 12-8, behind Smith and LeTourneau, who had four points each. Avery Tompkins and Cavin Cleaves netted two each for the winners. Indiana’s Tuttle and Mosher both had four points.
In the middle game of the afternoon, Notre Dame and UConn met up and Notre Dame’s Bragan had a personal and league-best 30 points in the 46-9 victory. Fletcher also hit double figures with 10, while Jalbert had four and LeRoy Gardiner chipped in with a hoop. For UConn, Wood led the way with five points and Duprey added another four.
In the late game, UNC and Florida battled it out. Florida’s Sargent had all 18 of his team’s points, but UNC’s more-balance attack won out. Ryan scored 12, Devine eight and Barnes and Van Houten both had four in the 28-18 win.
