HOULTON, Maine — Starting in April, the Houlton Police Department will embark on a new program called “Friendly Caller.” This program will consist of seniors, or those that are shut-ins, being placed on a list for the Houlton Police Department to have daily contact with to ensure they are safe.
How it works is those people that would like to be a part of this program, will simply sign up with the Houlton Police Department, giving their name, physical address, phone number, and contact people to reach in case of emergency.
Each day, between 6-10 a.m., those in the program are asked to call the Houlton Police Department to let them know everything is fine.
For those who do not contact the department, police will attempt to make contact, and if they are not successful via the phone, police will make physical contact with the person to ensure everything is fine.
“If at any time, you’re going to be away, it’s just a matter of a phone call letting us know the particulars,” Houlton Lt. Dan Pelletier said. “If you have signed up to be part of this program and you find out you no longer want to be involved, just let us know and your name will be taken off our contact list.”
Those who are interested may contact Pelletier at 532-2287 or visit the station in person at 97 Military St.
