Area ATV trails set to open May 15

Despite the past week’s unusually warm weather and sunshine, sections of area ATV trails still have snow or wet spots, with officials indicating opening date remains May 15.
Roger Hewitt Jr., president of the Washburn ATV Club, indicated Monday on the club’s Facebook page that he’s received several inquiries asking if trails are open, but his response has been “no, they are not.”
“Although the trails look nice and dusty in town, that’s not the story out of town in the wooded sections,” said Hewitt, noting the club’s two trail masters were out inspecting area routes and conditions are still not good in some sections.
“They reported there’s a section of trail from Perham to Blackstone Siding with snow and many soft sections. The trail to Carson Siding has some snow and is soft in places but seems to be drying up quick enough for the May 15 opening date,” Hewitt said.
Hewitt said Washburn’s opening date “also depends on our neighboring clubs on when they can open.”
“I know everyone is very eager to head out and ride and so am I. But please, stay off the trails until they are dry enough to open and also stay away from farmers’ crop lands,” said Hewitt. “We appreciate your cooperation.”
The Presque Isle Police Department also posted a warning on Facebook, advising riders to steer clear of the trails until the official opening day or a summons will be issued if anyone is caught riding the trails prior to that date.
