The Limestone-MSSM baseball team and the Fort Fairfield softball team are the hottest teams out of the gate this spring.
The Eagles took a 4-1 record into Tuesday’s game at Madawaska. Coach Glenn Michaud’s team used a pair of excellent pitching performances to down both Central Aroostook and Fort Kent in last week’s action. Limestone-MSSM was ranked sixth in the Eastern Maine Class D standings as of Tuesday morning.
The Fort Fairfield girls are rolling with a 6-1 record. Coach Jamie Selfridge’s team hosts Fort Kent, Thursday, Ashland Saturday and Wisdom Monday with hopes on building on their impressive streak, which has them at No. 2 in EM Class D.
Summaries of some of the baseball games played through Monday, May 6 are as follows:
John Bapst 3, Caribou 2 — The host Crusaders used a walk-off double off the bat of Evan Pelkey in the bottom of the seventh to down the Vikes in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.
Pitcher Matt Curry scattered nine hits in a tough complete-game loss for the Vikes. He led the offense with two of the four hits against winning pitcher Nolan Webber, driving in both runs.
John Bapst 9, Caribou 3 — In game two, Matt Manter and Mike Selander had two hits each and Cody Herbert tripled and scored, but it wasn’t enough as the Crusaders completed the sweep.
Sean Sadler took the loss on the mound, with Herbert seeing time in relief.
Wisdom 3, Fort Fairfield 0 — On Thursday, the Pioneers remained hot behind Nathan Boynton’s three-hit shutout. He struck out 13 Tiger batters, with Ryan Pelkey, Austin Bernier and Nathan Guimond collecting Fort’s only hits. Bernier was the hard-luck loser, allowing three hits in his six innings of work.
Limestone-MSSM 11, Central Aroostook 1 — Chris Bernier and Tyler Morgan collaborated on the four-hitter last Wednesday in a game called after 4-1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule. Tristan Kirk had a double and a single and drove in four runs for the Eagles. Conor Todd doubled and Dylan Murray had a single to drive in the lone Panther run.
Caribou 17, Houlton 7 — Last Tuesday in Houlton, the Vikings used a 16-hit attack to defeat the Shires. Herbert had three, while Dean Walker, Dylan Berkoski, Curry and Manter notched two each.
A review of various softball games played through Monday, May 6 are as follows:
Fort Fairfield 18, Washburn 6 — The Tigers rallied late to down the Beavers at home Friday. Kelsey Turner scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning off a Sydney Churchill RBI single for the key blow. Abbey Player and Sarah Watt had three hits each for FF, while Carmen Bragg and Nicole Olson each had three singles for the Beavers, who fell to 3-1 but are still in third place in the EM ‘D’ standings.
Fort Fairfield 14, Wisdom 7 — The Tigers doubled up on the Pioneers Thursday as Jordann Coiley struck out eight batters. Alexis Coiley, Emily Blaisdell and Autumn Parady led FF with three hits apiece.
Limestone-MSSM 29, Central Aroostook 3 — The Eagles prevailed last Wednesday as Madeline Williams’ four hits powered the 23-hit onslaught. Elly Bencivenga, Chelsey Pelkey, Daniele Pelkey, Annie Sinclair and Jackie Peers added three hits apiece for the victors, which combined with a win over Fort Kent Friday are now 5-0 and in fifth place in EM Class D.
Fort Fairfield 22, Madawaska 21 – The Tigers needed extra innings last Tuesday to outlast the Owls. Abbey Player’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth scored Kelsey Turner for the difference-making run. Player had three other hits in the game. Fort scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
