Wildcat boys capture preseason tournament
The Presque Isle Wildcats went 5-0-1 during the round-robin portion of Friday’s PIHS Invitational Soccer Tournament and went on to claim the boys’ title with a victory over Madawaska. The contest came down to penalty kicks after the two teams battled to a scoreless tie in regulation.
PI’s Devin Schinhofen, Chase Norton and Aaron Kofstad converted their kicks to help their team come out on top in the PK round, 3-2.
In the girls’ final, Caribou ousted PI in another match that came down to penalty kicks after neither team scored in regulation. Wildcat teammates Hannah Graham and Taylor Williams made their kicks, but the Vikings won, 4-2.
Other schools participating in the 21st annual tourney were Ashland, Van Buren, Fort Kent and Fort Fairfield.
KeyBank golf event
The seventh annual KeyBank Charity Golf Event is set for Saturday, Aug. 17 at Presque Isle Country Club.
Proceeds will benefit several area charitable organizations and projects.
Prizes include cash for the winning teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions for both gross and net scores. Prizes will also be offered for closest to the pin, longest drive and a putting contest. A new car will be a hole-in-one prize. A barbecue lunch for all participants is being provided.
The shotgun start is at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. There is no minimum handicap for the three-person teams. The registration fee is $120 per team.

Fall sports practices
Presque Isle High School golf practices begin Monday, Aug. 19 at 3:15 p.m. and fall cheering that same day at 6 p.m.

Free bike tour offered
Fresh Trails Adventures will be leading a free randonnee bike ride as a preview to its 2014 Tour de L’Acadie event beind held during next year’s World Acadian Congress.
The randonnee ride is not a race, but a group ride popular in Europe with the goal to enjoy the scenery, camaraderie and culture along the way.
Riders will have their choice of a 20-, 40-, or 80-mile loop, with all distances featuring bicycling through farmland, maple tree stands and undulating hills with some of the most picturesque scenery in the region.
There will be two departure points for riders. The first will be in Fort Kent at the UMFK athletic parking lot at 8 a.m. and the second in Baker Lake, New Brunswick at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Cyclists can register at each location 30 minutes prior to the start of the ride.
The Tour de L’Acadie ride is being conducted by Fresh Trails Adventures, a cycling and active adventure tour company based in Caribou. In the spirit of traditional randonnees, the event will be held rain or shine.
The ride will be guided and supported with a support vehicle, and registered cyclists will receive a Tour de L’Acadie T-shirt, a Fresh Trails Adventures pint glass and water bottle, Honey-Stinger all-natural nutritional products and a Rapha Musette bag. A small bag lunch will also be provided. Cyclists should bring any additional food and their passport (if beginning their ride in Fort Kent).

County runners compete in Beach to Beacon 10K
The Beach to Beacon 10K attracts runners from throughout the United States and beyond, but Aroostook County racers are known to flock to the Cape Elizabeth event and this year was no exception.
Paul Johnson of Fort Fairfield was 181st out of over 6,000 competitors in 37:54.3 and Jonathan Kelley of Presque Isle placed 728th in 44:39.9.
