OLD TOWN — The 64th Old Town Sectional Cross Country Meet took place Saturday, with Carsyn Koch of Washburn establishing a course record by completing the three-mile course in 19 minutes and 55.24 seconds.
Koch led the Beavers to second place in the nine-team meet. The four other Washburn scorers were all between the 18th and 23rd positions in the final standings.
Tori Koch (18th, 22:20.59), Emilia Churchill (19th, 22:21.48), Carmen Bragg (22nd, 22:35.15) and Mackenzie Worcester (23rd, 22:45.93) were all in a tight pack and helped the Beavers score 83 points. Mount Desert Island won with 28 points. Orono was third, just five behind Washburn.
The Caribou girls claimed the fifth spot with 124 points. They were led by Nerissa Larrabee, who was 13th in 21:56.2, and Robyn Larrabee, 16th in 22:11.13.
Chelsea Haney was 29th in 23:12.91, Kristyn Maley 31st in 23:18.15 and Kristin Macek 35th in 23:38.78 as the team’s other scorers.
John Bapst won the boys’ meet, tallying 53 points compared to 69 for runner-up Orono. Presque Isle was fourth with 88 points and Caribou fifth with 94, while Washburn ended up eighth with 207.
Caribou’s top runners were Lucas Kinney and Tsion McLeod, who were 14th and 15th, respectively. Kinney’s time was 18:29.16 and McLeod’s was 18:33.64.
Freshman Kyle Morris was 17th in 18:36.13, while teammates Tyler Strid (23rd, 18:53.14) and Caleb Hunter (30th, 19:38.54) were the Vikings’ other scoring runners. Elijah Verhoff was just behind Hunter in 31st place at 19:41.12, while Keith Draper, the team’s other competitor, was 34th in 19:51.15.
For Washburn, Derek Baker came in 32nd in 19:42.26. Cameron Preston (40th, 21:23.18) and Alex Pelletier (41st, 20:26.05) were the next Beavers to finish.
The next meet is the Festival of Champions, slated for Saturday.
The event attracts some of the top teams from throughout the state, as well as other schools in New England. Washburn, Caribou and Presque Isle are all set to make the trip to Belfast, which is also the site of this year’s Eastern Maine Championship meet Oct. 26.
