PRESQUE ISLE – Janet Snowman Duncan, 84, passed away peacefully September 28, 2013, at the Presque Isle Nursing Home following a long illness. She was born May 12, 1929, in Caribou to Leroy and Ruby (Ashby) Snowman.
Janet grew up and was educated in Caribou. She met Jack Duncan when they worked at J.C. Penney and their courtship flourished when they attended college in Boston. She graduated Massachusetts General Hospital’s registered nursing program in 1951 and worked at the Togus Veteran’s Hospital in Augusta before returning to Aroostook County. Janet and Jack were married in Caribou on October 18, 1952. When their children were young, most of Janet’s time was spent as a homemaker though she occasionally provided private nursing care for individuals. When her children were older, Janet worked at A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital and Presque Isle Nursing Home, where she was held in high regard by the staff and patients. She enjoyed participating in the Spragueville Extension and was especially active in the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church where she was an energetic, loyal member.
Janet and Jack always lived in Presque Isle but traveled extensively in and outside the U.S. Janet enjoyed the outdoors and happily went camping, canoeing, skiing, skating or out for a ramble in the woods on short notice. She was a faithful correspondent and wrote long, newsy letters to her daughters and family and many shorter notes to people in need of cheer. Janet was a loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, a generous hostess and friend to many. She was good-humored and kind and will be dearly missed.
