The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) recently welcomed Guy Peter Marquis, Jr. of Presque Isle, to serve as a veteran community leader and AmeriCorps volunteer for a 45-week, 1,700-hour term of national service. He is the son of Peter and Edna Marquis of Van Buren.
The MCC conducts conservation projects throughout Maine, including extensive recreational trail construction and rehabilitation. Marquis is a 1980 graduate of Van Buren District Secondary School and is a 2013 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a business administration degree. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for over 12 years and in the Maine Army National Guard for another eight years, including two separate active-duty deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Marquis will be hosted by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department for his term of national service.
Gov. Paul R. LePage welcomed Marquis Jr.’s decision to enter service in Maine.
“On behalf of the state of Maine, I would like to congratulate you on your commitment to serving Maine as a member of the Maine Conservation Corps,” said LePage. “The Maine Conservation Corps has done tremendous work making positive changes to our great state and nation.”
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) Commissioner Walt Whitcomb also welcomed Marquis and highlighted the important work that the MCC does on behalf of Maine citizens.
“As part of the DACF, the MCC’s four-fold mission is to: accomplish conservation projects, create conservation employment, provide conservation education and engage conservation volunteers,” said Whitcomb. “Since 1983, MCC-supported projects have helped build the infrastructure that so many Maine citizens enjoy in our parks and public places.”
